Here We Answer Some Of Our Most Commonly Asked Questions

What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy, and is highly researched and effective at treating PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders. The brain is plastic, meaning it is forever learning and making new neural connections, which means it can be rewired as a way to heal from traumas. Similar to a broken bone, you can see a doctor and be placed in a cast and the body does the internal healing, with EMDR – you see an EMDR therapist and your brain does the internal healing, which results in the long term treatment of PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions.

What are EMDR Intensives?

EMDR intensives are longer sessions either within a single day or within a week. Some intensives are 2-4 hours over a few weeks, while others are multiple sessions within a week for a few weeks. Some patients find this helpful because they can take time off of work to focus on their mental health, while others just want to feel better sooner and opt for the intensive treatment route. It is a way to tailor and customize treatment outside of the one hour session once a week.

What is the difference between an EMDR trained therapist and an EMDR Certified Therapist?

An EMDR trained clinician is required to take 5 days of training in EMDR and needs to complete 10 hours of consultation with an EMDRIA approved consultant. An EMDR Certified therapist has to do the above training plus the therapist needs to have at least 2 years experience as a therapist, has used EMDR with at least 25 patients, has to complete an addition 20 hours of consultation, and needs to take 12 CEU’s relating to EMDR, and needs to submit several professional references for approval through EMDRIA.

How long does it take before I feel better?

Some patients feel a relief of symptoms in one session, while others need a few more sessions before they start to feel relief from their symptoms. A single event trauma takes about 8-10 hours of EMDR to achieve a positive treatment outcome. Chronic childhood traumas or multiple traumas can take longer to treat.
